Reflective, developmental supervision for early-career psychologists.
I maintain a small number of places for the ongoing supervision of early-career psychologists and clinical psychology registrars. My approach is developmental and reflective: I'm interested in helping clinicians grow into their own identity as therapists, and become more confident, grounded and self-aware.
Alongside a focus on formulation — thinking carefully about how we come to understand the people in front of us — I'm interested in the clinician's own experience: the pressures, uncertainties and stresses of the early years. I'm a board-approved supervisor for psychologists in training, generally registered psychologists, and those seeking endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.
Most CPD for psychologists teaches a new modality or technique. This course does something different: it puts language and a framework around what it means to grow as a clinician — the processes that underlie effective therapy and effective therapists, whatever modalities you use. Each 90-minute session blends a didactic seminar, taught through case vignettes (including reflections from my own practice), with structured group reflection anchored to the real issues you face in your work.
What the literature has long told us: the model matters less than how we show up and care. An introduction to the common factors of therapy.
A self-reflection session on how we set the treatment frame: keeping to time, negotiating expectations, and reviewing progress and goals.
A guided exercise mapping our strengths (and how they show up as shadows), to clarify our therapeutic 'personality'.
The many shapes of a clinical formulation: how a living formulation is built, shared and revised through treatment.
Treatment where the relationship is an active ingredient; managing conflict and difficult dynamics in the room.
Examining how clients show up differently, and stir up different feelings in us (such as those that intimidate us, those we want to rescue, and those who are hard to reach).
Overcoming stuckness; when and how to refer on, and how to prevent it in the first place.
Becoming a clinician over a lifetime, and what sustains a career.
This course runs in small groups a couple of times a year. If you are interested, please let me know below and I'll be in touch with dates and details.
